If you do not have a foreign driver's license and are learning for the first time, you can obtain a driver's license by going to a local driving school. You must have a sufficient command of Japanese, as all lectures and instructions are given in Japanese. The number of days on which you are required to attend classes and
the tuition (usually 200,000 yen to 300,000 yen) differ depending on how many times you must take the tests. Provisional driver's licenses and the full license road test are conducted by the school. Only the written tests are taken at a government test center.
