Three forms of language instruction exist in Japan.

1) Japanese language courses provided by private universities for overseas students

2) Japanese language schools (both day courses and part-time courses)

3) Japanese language courses provided by volunteers

Learners may choose from a variety of types of instruction depending on their goals. In order to remain in Japan to learn Japanese and to obtain a visa for "College Student" or "Pre-college Student", students must attend either 1) or 2) (day courses of an accredited Japanese language institution).
The tuition fees at language institutions run by volunteers are usually low, as they generally are offered at actual cost.

*A list of Japanese language institutions is available at the NIC 3F Information Counter.
