If a foreign national wishes to seek employment and work in Japan, he or she must obtain the relevant visa.  The following visa categories permit the visa holder to work in Japan.

Except for intra-company transferees, changing jobs or accepting a job offer is permitted if the new job falls under a category permitted by your current visa. 
If the new job is not permitted under your current visa, you must apply for a change in visa category.


Those who have a visa which only permits you to study or stay with a family, you must apply for "special permission to work" (shikaku-gai katsudo kyoka) in the case you desire to work, otherwise  you cannot legally work in Japan.  With a college student visa you are permitted to work up to 28 hours per week (eight hours per day during long vacations), with a pre-college student visa you are permitted to work up to four hours per day.

Changing jobs
If you change your job and the nature of your new job differs from that of your previous job,  you must request a change to the appropriate visa.
