 If you want to dispose of an old TV, air conditioner, refrigerator, or washing machine you cannot simply disposed the item through your local city’s garbage collection service.
Under the Home Appliances Recycling Law, these items must be recycled through the manufacturer. From April 1, 2009, clothes dryers, liquid crystal & plasma display televisions will be added to the list.
If you want to dispose of one of these items, you can do so through a home appliance retail store.
As well as a standard recycling fee (see right), stores will also charge a shipping fee back to the manufacturer (1000 - 2000 Yen) and are usually able to collect from a your residence - for an additional fee. However, most retail stores will discount or offer free
shipping and collection of the old appliance if you purchase a replacement.
★Other electrical appliances (except PC hard drives, laptops, and PC monitors) can be disposed of through unburnable garbage collection (depending on the size of the item)or through large waste collection. See the NIC website for further
information.
