The Nagoya International Center has a number of Language Volunteers that can provide Japanese language translation or interpretation support to foreign residents for daily living assistance, international exchange events, and tourist spots. Support is available in English as well as German, French, Chinese, Thai, & over a dozen other languages.

If you or your organization would like the help of one or more of our volunteers please contact us, in English, at 052-581-5689 (Tues – Sun, 09:00 to 17:00).

Interpretation Volunteers


Volunteers provide daily living interpretation support for foreign residents at kindergartens etc., and provide interpretation support at international exchange events and tourist spots in and around the Nagoya area.

We cannot accept applications that include situations where a high level of specialist knowledge of the subject matter is required, where a perfect interpretation is needed, or situations where volunteers will be under pressure.

Application Timeline In general, applications are required at least 2 weeks in advance of the needed date. If multiple volunteers are required, please apply at least 1 month in advance.
Costs incurred to the applicant Volunteer commuting fee (1000 Yen + any additional cost) and any other additional costs the volunteer may incur during the interpretation (entry fees, meal costs, etc) are the responsibility of the applicant.

Translation Volunteers

Target Material

Letters (not continued correspondence)
Basic document translation with the exception of business-related documents, documents where a high level of specialist knowledge is required, official documents, reports, thesis, and political / religious propaganda.
Required Translation Time Generally between 10 days and 2 weeks, but depending on the document additional time may be required.
Costs incurred to the applicant Any postage costs (payment in stamps is fine). In cases, where e-mail or faxing can be used, no additional cost will be required.

The Nagoya International Center reserves the right to decline application requests that may be inappropriate or that can not be accommodated.
