Development Training for Supporters of Foreign Students and Children 外国籍児童・生徒サポーター養成研修

Many different problems can arise when supporting a child through his/her development. For foreign children living in Japan, small problems can quickly become large problems if not addressed appropriately. If you have a child of foreign nationality in your care (for example as a teacher), then perhaps this training program can assist you.

This course will run on 6 selected Saturdays between August 28 and January 22, 2011 at the Nagoya International Center.
Places are limited and reservations are required. The course will be held in Japanese only.

Japanese Classes at the NIC

The Center’s ever-popular adult Japanese program offers 7 types of classes ranging from conversation for beginners to Kanji. There is also a children's Japanse class!

Kyuban Matsuri

Experience community building with a smile at an international family festival in the heart of multicultural Minato Ward!
Events include a soccer tournament, a World matsuri, bon dancing, a taiko drum performance from the children of Kyuban Kindergarten, stage performances, and songs & dances from around the world!
When: Saturday, August 21 (13:00 - 20:00) & Sunday, August 22 (10:00 - 15:00)
Where: Tokai Elementary School & Kyuban Danchi, Minato Ward
Access: A 10 minute walk from Tokai-dori Subway Station, exit 4 (see map below)

nurseFree Health Consultations for Children of Foreign Nationality

In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to prevent illness, the Medical Information Center Aichi (MICA) is offering free health & dental consultations to foreign children and their parents in English and Portuguese. The consultations will include a height, weight, bone density, and body fat percentage check, urine analysis, a chest x-ray, a dental check, an abdominal examination, dental hygiene instruction, and an explanation of the results. Reservations are not required! Children should attend with a parent.
When: Sunday, August 22 (13:00 - 15:00) - as part of the Kyuban Matsuri (see above)

Take Part in Disaster Prevention Training

The Nagoya International Center is offering foreign residents the opportunity to join Disaster Prevention Day training on Sunday, September 5 (08:00 - 11:00) in the Hirabari area of Tempaku Ward.

Foreign residents from each target language – English, Spanish, Chinese, and Portuguese - are needed. The training will be held on the assumption that a devastating earthquake has occurred in the Nagoya area. Participants will be asked to take part in an evacuation center simulation as refugee foreign residents who are unable to understand Japanese. Knowledge of Japanese is not required as volunteer interpreters will be present. Participants will also be able to observe first aid and rescue training. Participants will also receive a related complimentary gift.

Children’s Story Book Time

Come and share in the fun at the Nagoya International Center 3F Library and listen to foreign volunteers as they read a selection of books from the library's vast children's story book section in their native language.

NIC Book Recycling Bazaar 本のリサイクルバザー

When: Sunday, June 13 (13:00 – 15:00)
Where: Nagoya International Center 5F, Conference Room 1
Admission: Free
Over 2000 items including English fiction paperbacks, children’s books, books about Japan, EFL texts, books for Japanese Language learners, manga, and books in other languages (Chinese, Portuguese, & Spanish). Prices are not set and visitors can donate as much as they like after choosing books.

Money raised from the bazaar will be donated between the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan for the promotion of literacy education in developing countries and the NIC Library for the purchase of new books.

■ November Book Bazaar Report - 77,895 Yen was raised on behalf of UNESCO & the Nagoya International Center Library. Thank you for your support. The next bazaar will be in November.

■Request A Book- Half of the money raised from the bazaar will go towards new books for the NIC Library. If you have searched through our collection, but couldn’t find what you were looking for - now is the best time to let us know what book or DVD our library needs and we will try to get it for you. - Make a request
