4th International Wireless Ready Symposium on Digital Technologies and Language Teaching

The Takisanji Ogre Festival 滝山寺鬼まつ
This is a popular festival and attracts large crowds each year. The fire festival (from 19:45) sees three “ogres” chased around the main temple by 30 torch-bearing men.
When: Saturday, February 20 (from 13:00, the main ogre ceremony starts at around 19:00)
Where: Takisanji Temple滝山寺, Okazaki City
Access: From Meitetsu Higashi Okazaki (東岡崎) take a Meitetsu bus bound for Onuma (大沼) or Kamiyonagochi (上米河内) and get off at Takisanji-shita (滝山寺下); takes 25 minutes and costs 370 Yen. Buses depart from bus stop #5 at the North Exit at 12:20, 13:00,
13:40, 15:50, 16:30, 17:50, & 18:00; additional temporary services will also be available. A special park & ride shuttle bus service will also be available (17:00 -19:20) from the Okazaki Municipal Athletic Ground県営岡崎総合運動場.

Clown! Clown! Clown! 2010
Slap stick side-splitting comedy is coming to Nagoya courtesy of the Clown Family Pleasure B troupe! Over 30 clowns will be on showing off their juggling, pantomime, dancing, conjuring, acrobatic, and comedy skills.

Konomiya Hadaka Matsuri 国府宮はだか祭
When: Friday, February 26 (12:00 - 17:00; climax from 15:00)
Where: Konomiya Shrine国府宮神社, Inazawa City
Access: A 3 minute walk from the north exit of Konomiya Station (国府宮), off the Meitetsu Nagoya Main line between Nagoya and Gifu; takes 13 minutes and cost 340 Yen from Nagoya Station.
Known locally as the Hadaka Matsuri, this festival dates back to 767. Approximately 4000 men, wearing only white loin cloths, march in an unruly procession towards Konomiya Shrine whilst holding huge bamboo poles above their heads.
At the shrine, the crowd violently clamors to touch a consecrated naked man and cold water is constantly showered over the crowd to try and disperse them.

Kinekosa Matsuri 岩塚きねこさ祭
Admire the resilience of 12 hardy participants as they wade into the bitterly cold waters of Nagoya’s Shonai River - wearing only their loin clothes - in this annual Shinto ritual. Further festivities will take place at the neighbouring Shichisho-sha Shrine (七所社)
from 14:00 to 16:00.

Flower Dome 2010 フラワードーム
Flowers and rare plants from all over the world will be on display with gardeners and florists from all over Japan competing in numerous prize events in Japan’s largest annual flower show. There will also be an ikebana demonstration (3/16), a COP10 family quiz, a
special exhibition of flowers from Australia, a gardening classroom, flower arranging demonstrations (3/13, 14) and a “hands on” corner (3/15 – 17).

The Tagata Festival
This is the famous festival in your guide book that features a two-metre long, 280 kg, phallus-shaped wooden sculpture, numerous smaller similar-shaped sculptures, as well as phallus-shaped foods and souvenirs are sold and sake is passed out freely by Shinto
priests from large wooden barrels. If you are in Japan only for a short time, this is a festival you should not miss.

2010 Nagoya International Women’s Marathon

Tokugawaen Open Day
The Tokugawa Lord, Mitsutomo Tokugawa, built the gardens and house as a retirement home and relocated here from Ozone in 1695. To commemorate this event, the gardens have an annual open day. A great chance to enjoy the gardens for free with added entertainment
provided by several street entertainers.

ETJ-Aichi English Teaching Workshop: World Englishes Education in High School
Naoko Murata and Kayo Sugimoto report on a high school pilot program in which English was taught via the concept of world Englishes, and how awareness of varieties of English increased student motivation. A discussion will follow the presentation.
There is a 500 Yen attendance fee payable at the workshop and 70-seat limit, so pre-registration is advised.

Inuyama Castle Spring Festival 犬山祭
From 18:00 to 21:30 traditional festival floats are lit up and pulled through the city’s cherry blossomed streets. The festival starts in front of Haritsuna Jinja, located down the hill from Inuyama Castle - Japan’s oldest. The castle is open daily (09:00 to 17:00)
, admission is 500 Yen for adults and 100 Yen for children under 15.

The Ieyasu Parade家康行列
This is the main event of Okazaki’s annual cherry blossom festival. More than one thousand samurai warriors led by Japan’s most prominent historical figure, Okazaki-born Tokugawa Ieyasu will parade through the streets and perform a mock battle on the banks of the
river.

Kakuozan Spring Festival 覚王山春祭
When: April 10, 11 (10:00 - 18:00)
Where: On the main street from Kakuozan Subway Station leading up the hill to Nittaiji Temple. With an art market, flea market, performance stage, and various international themed stalls, this event is always well attended.
Access: A 5 minute walk up the hill from exit 1 of Kakuozan Subway Station.
