■World Collaboration Festival 2009
The annual two-day festival hosts events based on the theme of international cooperation and collaboration, and is the largest event of its kind in the Chubu region. The festival includes displays and stage shows, performances of songs and dances from around the
world, folk crafts, and the chance to sample world cuisine.
Sample food, buy goods, learn about good causes at the 60 booths hosted by non-profit groups and organizations. Learn about earthquakes and how to prepare for them at the Disaster Prevention Booth for Foreign Nationals. Get a free health check, and learn how to use an
AED.
When: October 24 & 25 (event times vary)

■Nagoya-style Japanese recipes in English
J-Simple Recipes (www.j-simplerecipes.com),is an all-English website created by the Imai Family from Ichinomiya City, Aichi. The site has
photo-aided step-by-step instructions of how to easily prepare simple Japanese recipes, as well as information on meal types, foodstuffs, and table manners.

■Your Visa & Health Insurance
If you have not been following the news lately, it may come as a shock to you that the Immigration Bureau will be including a check on health insurance enrollment as part of the visa renewal process from April 2010.
The General Union has for a number of years been advocating for the right of teachers to be enrolled in shakai hoken (health & pension) through their employers. Impending revisions to immigration law and guidelines make this more important than ever. The GU will
be holding an information seminar and public forum on Sunday, November 1 (17:00 - 18:30) at their Nagoya Office.

■Walking with NIC
Want to learn about the hidden history of Nagoya? The NIC Walking Guide volunteer group will be providing a guided walk in English around the Nagoya Cultural Path - an area rich
in preserved historical buildings located between Nagoya Castle and Tokugawa-en. In the Edo Period (1603-1867), the area was where middle and lower-class samurai lived. From the Meiji through early Showa Periods (1868-1930), the area was home to entrepreneurs,
missionaries, journalists, and artists.
Take in Aichi’s oldest church, the former home of Sasuke TOYODA - built 1923, and the Futaba Museum - the former home of Japan’s first actress, Sadayakko KAWAKAMI (1871 - 1946).
When: Saturday, November 28 (09:30 - 12:30) Course length: approximately 4km
Participation Fee: Free - but 400Yen admission to the Futaba Museum and Shumokukan, and a 100 Yen insurance fee is required.
Places are limited and will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis by calling 052-581-0100.
Applications will be accepted from October 20.

■ENJOY TOYOTA - English Guided Tour to a Sake Brewery
English speaking volunteer guides of Toyota International Association (English Information For Friends) will take you on a walking tour to sakagura (warehouse styled sake brewery) in Toyota City. Take this rare opportunity only available in the fall-winter season
and deepen your knowledge about the sake-making process. Your Japanese friends are welcome too.
- When: 13:00 - 15:30 on November 14, 21, & 28 - all Saturdays. All tours starts from in front of the ticket gates at Shin-Toyota Station 新豊田.
- Cost: 500 Yen (tour fee) + 440 Yen (return train ticket)

Kawasumi-sai is a festival held by medical & nursing students in Nagoya City University. Check your body's condition, learn about leukemia and first aid, and take part in games and a charity event for the benefit of Japan's bone marrow bank. A fun and educational

■FAE 24 – The Foreign Artists Exhibition
November sees the return of the ever-popular Nagoya Foreign Artists Exhibition at the Nagoya International Center. The FAE has been a regular fixture at the NIC since 1986. Organized by the Central Japan International Society
(CJIS), with support from Nagoya International Center (NIC), this long-running show always attracts a diverse range of artists. Why not drop by and see what local artists are up to?

■Free Gyoseishoshi Consultations & Sole Proprietorship Start-up Seminar for Foreign Residents
The Nagoya International Center will be hosting free gyoseishoshi consultations on Saturday, December 12 (13:00 - 17:00) in the center’s 4F Exhibition Room.
-English, Filipino, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese interpreters are available.
-Places are limited.
The NIC will also be hosting a free sole proprietorship start-up seminar (in Japanese with an English interpreter) on Saturday, December 12 (11:00 - 12:00) on the center’s 5F.
If you want to know more about how you can easily start-up and register their own one-man business - this is for you. Maximum 20 people.
-Reservations for both sessions are required and can be made from Wednesday, November 11 at 052-581-0100.
A gyoseishoshi (行政書士) is nationally certified administrative clerk who can assist you and act on your behalf as a when handling administrative work to be turned into governmental offices; for
example paperwork related to immigration, naturalization, marriage, divorce, starting a business, and inheritance matters.

■NIC Book Recycling Bazaar

Thousands of items including English fiction paperbacks, children’s books, books about Japan, EFL texts, and books for Japanese Language learners. Prices are not set and visitors can donate as much as they like after choosing books. Money raised will be donated
between the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan & the NIC Library.

This tournament, sanctioned by the ITF and ATP was started last year to give more opportunity to Japanese players to earn international ranking points. Expect to see many young and junior-level players, both Japanese and International, with rankings between 100 and
200. All the top-ranked players have played in this type of tournament in their early careers, so some of the players on could well be a future Wimbledon champion. There are both mens and womens singles & doubles tournamnets.

■Library Recommendations
This month we’ll introduce several books from the Literature and Language (LIT) section as part of our introduction to the various subject areas in the reading room of the library. The LIT section consists of more than 160 volumes which include
various types of literature - short stories, anthologies, essays, quotations, anecdotes, literary criticism, etc. along with books on language, linguistics and writing.
Among the many collections of short stories and tales are the popular Night Out/ Night In series including Girls’ Night Out/ Boys’ Night In which feature writers Kathy Lette, Josie Lloyd, Fiona Walker,
Mike Gayle, Mark Barrowcliffe, Emlyn Rees and many more. Stories from many countries are also represented. Among the more popular are
Irish Girls About Town which include stories by Maeve Binchy, Marian Keyes and
Cathy Kelly along with 13 other Irish women authors. Another popular collection titled 100 NZ Short Stories features the very short works of 89 New Zealand authors including such well-known ones as
Patricia Grace, Owen Marshall and Witi Ihimaera, as well as several interesting new writers.
Recently we have been fortunate to acquire The Library of America’s seven-volume collection of Henry James writings, essays, novels and literary criticism.
Among our widely read books on writing and linguistics are Michael C. Smith and Suzanne Greenberg’s Everyday Creative
Writing: Panning for Gold in the Kitchen Sink and Introducing Linguistics by R.L. Trask and Bill Maybin.
