There are several ways to travel in Japan - the railway, highway bus, ferry, and airplane. You can find schedules and fares in the monthly Japanese publication Jikokuhyo ("Transit Schedules") available at book shops. You can buy tickets at any ticket counter in a station (cash only) or at any major travel agency (credit cards accepted). Several discount shops called Kinken shop also offer train tickets, movie tickets, and gift certificates at low prices. These shops are located near major stations such as Nagoya, Sakae, and Imaike.

Highway buses
Highway bus service is available from Nagoya to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and other major cities. Compared to the train, the highway bus is more economical, although it takes more time to arrive at your destination. Tickets usually go on sale one month before the departure date.
Tokyo-Nagoya travel time (daytime): 5 hr., 43 min.
Fare: 5,100yen (one-way), 8,760yen (return, valid for six days)

Ferries
Long-distance ferry service is available between Nagoya and Sendai (Miyagi), Tomakomai (Hokkaido), and Naha (Okinawa). Regular overseas ferry services to China and Korea are also available from such ports as Osaka, Kobe, and Hakata.

Rental cars
If you want to rent a car, you need to have a valid Japanese or international driver's license, your passport, and your alien registration card. If you don't speak Japanese well, you are advised to bring along someone who speaks Japanese when you go to the rental car office.

Airplane flights

Nagoya is served by both Nagoya Domestic Airport and Chubu International Airport, both of which are within a 30 minute commute of the city center. You can buy domestic airline tickets at the airline counter, at any major travel agency, or at the Midori no Madoguchi (Green Counter) of any major JR station. The airlines offer a variety of discount fares. For information, please inquire at the counter. International airline tickets are available at travel agencies or at airline company counters, but the fares differ. For information, please inquire at the counter.
