World Cosplay Summit 2019
The World Cosplay Summit is a huge gathering of international costume players (from 40 countries and regions) dressed up as characters from Japanese manga, animation, video games, and SFX shows, competing for the 2019 cosplay crown. Featuring stage performances, photo sessions, parades and more, the highlight is the World Cosplay Championship to determine the grand champion. Last year's event attracted 248,000 people to the Oasis 21 venue.

To help World Cosplay Summit 2019 participants and spectators travel between venues on the City Bus and Subway, the City of Nagoya Transportation Bureau is releasing a commemorative World Cosplay Summit 2019 Weekend Eco Ticket (Donichi-eko-kippu / ドニチエコきっぷ). Like the regular Weekend Eco Ticket, the ticket allows unlimited travel on City Bus and Subway services for one day.

A famous summer purification ritual, in which worshippers carrying reeds with ritual paper streamers pass through a ring of straw, first passing to the left, then right, then left, in a figure '8' pattern. It is said that through this, one can be freed of sin, shame, and misfortune, and stay cheerful and healthy without illness over summer. The lanterns tied to bamboo branches hung outside homes in the surrounding neighborhood are synonymous with summer to locals.

Endōji Tanabata Matsuri
The 64th Endōji Tanabata Matsuri will feature a variety of events and performances including Awa-odori dancing, taiko drum performances, a parade featuring the Pokka Lemon Fire Department Band, and more. Enjoy the festive atmosphere as the arcade is transformed into a gallery of fantastic hanging papier-mâché figures.

The 66th Anjo Tanabata Matsuri
A grand, 3-day spectacle in which central Anjo is decked with various traditional decorations and transformed into another world, with parades, stage events and more. Tanabata (七夕) being an occasion to make wishes, visitors can participate in a number of rare wish-making events only found at the Anjo Tanabata Matsuri, such as "wish balloons" (願いごとふうせん) in which a swarm of (environmentally friendly) balloons inscribed with wishes are launched into the air en masse.

The 69th Osu Summer Festival

Nagoya Castle Summer Festival
There's something for everyone at Nagoya Castle's annual summer festival - including a Bon odori dancing event (9 - 18 Aug.), and performances on the specially-built stage include live music and more. There'll also be stalls offering amusements.

Cooling Down in the Evening at Tokugawaen
Take a well-earned break from the summer heat with an evening visit to Tokugawaen Japanese garden, which will be illuminated by floating lanterns. Opening hours will be extended to 20:30 (last entry 20:00), and there will be a variety of attractions to enjoy.

The island of Himakajima is well known as a center of octopus (tako / たこ) production, and this annual octopus festival serves as a memorial to the spirits of octopuses, and to pray for bumper catches. Morning festivities include a procession of portable octopus shrine-bearing children, releasing octopuses, and memorial rituals. In the evening, children present taiko drum and dance performances before a fireworks show draws the day's events to a close.

Nishio Yonezu River Festival
A Bon festival (a period at which the spirits of one's ancestors are thought to return to their loved ones) event held annually to ameliorate the suffering of the spirits of those who have drowned or died in war.
Some 2,000 lanterns are set afloat on the river as Buddhist sutras are read, followed by around 3,000 fireworks, including star mines, sparkling and lighting up the evening sky.

Miyoshi Giant Lantern Festival
The annual summer festival of Miyoshi Inarikaku Shrine, in the heart of Miyoshi City. Three 11m-high lanterns are suspended in the night sky, and there are a variety of stalls both days. Festivities include children's o-hayashi (お囃子 / traditional festive music) and Bō-no-te (棒の手 / martial arts-based dance), and fireworks on the nearby Botagaike Pond (保田ヶ池).

An annual observance at Miyaji Tenjin Shrine in Toyokawa City, said to have begun in the Edo period when parishioners' prayers for respite during a terrible drought were answered with heavy rain. The festival features dashi (山車) floats, a mikoshi (神輿) procession accompanying the deity, and the major highlight is the Kabuki-gyōretsu (歌舞伎行列), a procession of local youths dressed and made up as courtesans, warriors and young women (18 Aug., 14:00 - 19:00).

The 32nd Toyokawa Tezutsu Festival
A festival that showcases the tradition of hand-held fireworks passed down by shrines within Toyokawa City, now recognized throughout the country. Be thrilled by the columns of flame and sparks lighting up the night sky, and the explosive sound as the bottom of the cylinder is blown out in what is known as hane (ハネ).
Around 400 huge tezutsu hand-held fireworks and around 2,000 rocket fireworks.

Mikawa Isshiki Great Lantern Festival
With a proud history of over 450 years, this festival of Mikawa Isshiki Suwa Shrine in Nishio City is a designated Prefectural Tangible Folk Cultural Property. Enormous lanterns measuring between 6 and 10m in height are hung, swaying in the twilight. See the fantastic sight of the illuminated lanterns, adorned with legendary and historical figures, floating in the night sky.

AICHI IMPACT! 2019
The opening event at the new Aichi Sky Expo (Aichi International Convention & Exhibition Center) will be AICHI IMPACT! 2019, a festival combining e-sports and live entertainment. As well as a large-scale e-sports event featuring top players from both Japan and overseas and celebrity players (31 Aug. & 1 Sep.), KPOP FESTIVAL presents performances by an international lineup of K-pop artists (30 & 31 Aug.)

The largest antique fair in the Tokai region, packed with all kinds of antiques from Japan and abroad. Cormorant Fishing on the Kiso River
Ukai (鵜飼) is fishing using specially-trained cormorants (鵜 / u) to catch, swallow, and regurgitate the fish, a unique technique passed down through the generations. Weather and river conditions pending, there are daily ukai tours in Inuyama until the early autumn. Tours last between 1hr 15 min. (without meal) and 2 hrs. 30 min. (with meal) and visitors are taken out on special viewing boats to within close proximity of the fishing boats.

The "beer garden" is something of a summer tradition in Japan, a place to cool off and enjoy eating, drinking and chatting outdoors. Charges cover unlimited food and drinks for a specified time, but some offer dishes or drinks for which an additional fee is required. Here is a selection of some of the numerous beer gardens around central Nagoya.
Beer Garden Maiami ビアガーデンマイアミ名古屋栄店A beer hall originally for Allied soldiers during the Occupation was reborn as Beer Garden Miami atop the (then newly-completed) old Dai Nagoya Building in 1963, and has been a summer evening fixture ever since. Now located in Sakae, Maiami continues to offer beer, food and entertainment with resident idols Mai-chan and Ami-chan.
