Life without tea is boring!
Matcha, Sencha, Bancha, Gyokuro. We are surrounded by things related to tea: colors, words, and even sayings, such as "A cup of tea in the morning keeps troubles away for the day."
Tea has added color to Japanese culture since ancient times. The custom of drinking tea used to be a culture of the upper class. It was during the Edo period, when roads were built and economic activities flourished, that the custom spread to the common people and tea cultivation became widespread throughout the country.
Tea attracted everyone from the commoners to shoguns, healing the body and soul, creating opportunities for socializing, and nurturing people's sensibilities.
This exhibition explores, along with the works of Utagawa Hiroshige, the culture related to tea, including tea-producing regions and teahouses along the Tokaido Road, famous treats along the roadside, popular waitresses, and brown colors (chairo, which literally means tea color) popularized by Kabuki actors.
Come join us for tea time to savor the mellow aroma and beautiful colors of tea.
