INAX Museums Thematic Exhibition: "From the Collection of Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum For a Happy Afterlife: Miniature Household Appliances from Ancient China"(INAXライブミュージアム 企画展「愛知県陶磁美術館コレクション あの世でもハッピーライフ~中国二千年前の住宅設備機器~」)

2026.04.07

Ancient Chinese tombs contained funerary objects known as architectural mingqi. They are miniature pottery models of buildings and household items such as houses, wells, toilets with pigsties, stoves, and furniture. It was believed that the deceased continued to live in a world that was an extension of the mortal world. Therefore, to ensure they could live comfortably and happily in the afterlife, the everyday items and lifestyles from their lives were recreated in pottery, including things we would now call household appliances. Though differing in size and material compared to the real items and lacking practicality, they express a wish for an ideal life, appearing simple yet realistic and vivid. This exhibition showcases a total of approximately 50 pieces from the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum's collection of mingqi, spanning the Han Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty in China, and our own collection. The well is equipped with a pulley for hauling up the bucket used to draw water, the stove platform features embossed patterns of food items such as fish and cooking utensils, and the toilet includes a hole. In addition to these works, which are essential in terms of architectural mingqi, this exhibition shows pieces depicting a prosperous afterlife, inviting visitors to explore scenes of daily life in ancient China while uncovering the hidden beauty of pottery.
