National Holidays in October (10月の祝日)

■Mon. 14 Oct. - Taiiku no Hi (体育の日)

Taiiku no Hi, or Health and Sports Day, is a national holiday to promote the development of healthy minds and bodies through the enjoyment of sport. Formerly observed on 10 October, the date of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, it is now observed on the second Monday in October. From 2020, the holiday will be renamed Supōtsu no Hi (スポーツの日 / Sports Day), and moved to Friday 24 July (for 2020 only) to mark the opening of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

■Tue. 22 Oct. - Sokuirei-seiden-no-gi no okonawareru Hi (即位礼正殿の儀の行われる日)

The day of the enthronement ceremony of the new Emperor, Naruhito, a national holiday this year only.
