Evacuation Information (避難情報について)

2021.05.26

*The information here refers to the revised Evacuation Information which came into effect on 20 May, 2021.

Evacuation Information (hinan jōhō / 避難情報) is issued by the City of Nagoya if flooding (external inundation), internal inundation, landslide, etc. are predicted. There are 5 Alert Levels (keikai reberu / 警戒レベル) to clarify the corresponding measures to be taken by residents.

Residents will be notified of Evacuation Information by TV and radio, mobile phone messaging services, the official City of Nagoya website (Japanese; www.city.nagoya.jp), emergency speaker system (announcements and sirens*; see here for more on emergency broadcasts), loudspeaker vehicles and the local disaster relief headquarters.

As Evacuation Information is issued in Japanese, it is important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese terms for the different Evacuation Information that can be issued.

*Sirens will sound for 3 seconds, followed by a 2-second pause, and repeat.
*Early Advisory Information (早期注意情報, Alert Level 1) and Heavy Rain, Flood and Storm Surge Advisories (注意報, Alert Level 2) are issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
