Q&A: Why am I paying more resident tax this year than last year?

2024.08.04

Q.

I left my company in March and moved to another company in April. I am paying more resident tax this year than last year. Why is my resident tax increasing although my income has decreased compared to last year due to a job change?

A.

Resident tax is determined based on income from January 1st to December 31st of the previous year. In addition, resident tax is paid to the city or town where you are registered as a resident on January 1st. The amount to be paid is determined based on the previous year's income and will be notified to the individual in a notification letter around June.
