【NEW】Q: I have a child going to be enrolled in high school. How much does it cost for enrollment?(高校へ進学する子供がいます。入学する時に、いくら費用がかかりますか。)

2025.09.20

Q: I have a child going to be enrolled in high school. How much does it cost for enrollment?

A: Public high schools receive subsidies from the government, so guardians do not have to pay tuition fees. However, you must pay other fees in regard to enrollment. You will need to pay 40,000 yen for admission fees, about 50,000 yen for textbooks and necessaries for classes, and about 50,000 yen for a school uniform. In total, you will need about 140,000 yen for enrollment. (Additionally, you may need to pay for a PC.) There are some grant programs that do not require repayment, but you cannot receive the money until after enrollment. It is not possible to receive the subsidies before enrollment, so you will need to prepare the required money in advance.

In addition, if your child will be enrolled in a private high school, you will need to prepare about 600,000 yen. Tuition fees can be subsidized by national and prefectural funds, but you cannot receive them until after enrollment.

On the other hand, public part-time high schools(*) require low admission fees and tuition fees, and most of the schools do not require school uniforms, so the total cost required for enrollment is only a few tens of thousands of yen. After graduation, your child can choose to proceed to the next level of education.

(*) Part-time high schools focus on studying basics and offer classes that are easy to follow. There are two types of part-time high schools: night part-time high schools start from around 5:30 p.m. and day part-time high schools start from around 9:00 a.m.)
