Toyota Municipal Museum of Art: Exhibition, Anti-Action: Artist Women's Challenges and Responses in Postwar Japan(豊田市美術館 展覧会「アンチ・アクション 彼女たち、それぞれの応答と挑戦」 )
2025.11.30
This exhibition redefines the creative works of Japanese female artists between the 1950s and 1960s through the lens of the keyword "anti-action." After World War II, abstract art, known for its powerful creative acts such as Art Informel and Action Painting, swept the art world, and a number of female artists rose to prominence. However, as actions associated with masculinity, such as boldness and heroism, became the focus of recognition, the works of many female artists were therefore overlooked by history. Guided by the gender studies perspective presented in the book Anti-Action (written by Izumi Nakajima, 2019), this exhibition showcases approximately 120 artworks by 14 artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Atsuko Tanaka, and Hideko Fukushima. Look closely at their competitive spirit toward actions and the unique path of challenges they took.
