Tsuguharu Foujita was a painter who gained worldwide renown as a darling of the School of Paris. It is little known that Foujita left behind a large number of photographs. This exhibition reexamines his creation of paintings with a focus on his photographs, exploring his creative journey where painting and photography intersect. Having owned a camera since his youth, Foujita left behind thousands of photographs throughout his life. These photographs were not only taken as records of memories. He would sometimes select people's faces, clothing, animals, buildings, and other elements from the photographs, freely combining them to create paintings. This exhibition will display his best works alongside the photographs that served as their source materials. Foujita also took an extensive series of self-portrait photos. His iconic appearance--a bobbed haircut, round glasses, and small mustache--was widely disseminated through self-portrait drawings and photographs, helping to build his fame. He was one of the first to recognize the power of photography as a medium, and he was also adept at strategic self-promotion. Drawing, photographing, and being photographed. Foujita's diverse perspectives come and go between paintings and photographs. Enjoy the undiscovered charm of his works, accompanied by photographs including many shown in Japan for the first time.
