Special Commemorative Exhibition for the 90th Anniversary of the Tokugawa Art Museum, National Treasure: The Tale of Genji Illustrated Scrolls(徳川美術館開館90周年 特別展 国宝 源氏物語絵巻)
2025.12.07
The Tale of Genji illustrated scrolls, designated as national treasures, are some of Japan's most famous and important picture scrolls. These scrolls are the oldest surviving paintings based on the Tale of Genji, masterfully expressing the story's world and the characters' emotional aspects within a tranquil, refined aesthetic. The text is written in elegant calligraphy on beautifully decorated paper, conveying an atmosphere of gracefulness from an era close to the original work, fascinating viewers even today. To mark the 90th anniversary of its opening, the museum will exhibit all the scrolls together in Nagoya for the first time in 10 years.
[Point to note] As we expect large crowds during the event period, we will not be accepting group visitors. We appreciate your understanding.
