2022.03.15

The law has been revised to prohibit the possession of crossbows in principle, and a permit will be required to be able to own a crossbow.
After 15 March, 2022, illegal possession of a crossbow will be charged as a crime, with a penalty of up to three years imprisonment, or a fine of up to 500,000 Yen.

What type of crossbows are subject to regulation?

Among bows that have a mechanism for fixing and releasing the draw string to fire arrows, those where the kinetic energy of the arrow exceeds a value with the potential to endanger human life will be subject to regulation.

What if I have a crossbow at home?

Apply for a permit from 15 March to 14 September 2022, or request that police dispose of it. If these measures are taken within the designated period, you will not be charged with a crime.

How can I dispose of a crossbow?

Take the crossbow to the nearest police station, and police will dispose of it for free. Disposal requests can be made even before 15 March.
