If a major natural disaster occurs in Nagoya City, language volunteers will be present at ward offices and evacuation centers in affected areas to interpret information for non-Japanese speaking foreign nationals that are in need of help. - Disaster Language Volunteers
Volunteer activities: In order to provide support to resident foreign nationals with an insufficient level of Japanese language ability and who have difficulty obtaining essential information in the event of an earthquake or other large-scale disaster, volunteers will be stationed at ward offices and evacuation centers to translate, interpret, and gather and provide information.
At other times, volunteers will interpret at disaster preparedness promotion events, emergency drills, etc. aimed at resident foreign nationals.
Frequency of activities: Any time; subject to issuance of a request by Nagoya International Center.
Requirements for registration: Must be over 20 years old, with at least an everyday conversational ability in Japanese and another language, and a strong interest in disaster preparedness.
- Language Volunteers
Volunteer activities: Volunteers will provide interpreting and translation in situations where resident foreign nationals require linguistic support. This includes interpreting at nursery schools and at service counters at local government offices; and translation of letters and brief documents (excluding official documents).
Frequency of activities: Any time; subject to issuance of a request by Nagoya International Center.
Requirements for registration:
English: Must have at least EIKEN Grade Pre-1, or a TOEIC score of 750 or equivalent or higher; must be free on weekdays; must also be able to register as a Disaster Language Volunteer.
Other languages: Must have a high level of proficiency in Japanese and another language.
